It's true - Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid. The world's seas are acting as a vast carbon sink absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide every year - this has the effect of making the sea more acid - which in turn affects the life cycles of planktons, shell fish and corals - their larvae are at the base of the food chain and should they cease to thrive it could have a dramatic effect on marine life.
